As a freelancer, it happens that you have a few days or weeks of downtime here and there between customer orders. I like using these phases for further training and “passion projects”.
After a long phase with many illustration orders, I felt the need to swap the pen and organic lines for layout, simple graphic elements and typography. This is how the idea for designing this fictional surf magazine came about.
I find more than enough sources of inspiration thanks to my life by sea, in the middle of one of the surfing capitals of Europe. The challenge was to come up with different content and formats that would be expected in a magazine like this, without any editorial experience. It contains articles of varying lengths, as well as a column, an interview, product collections/advertisements, travel tips and reports.
The design aimed to combine modern design and a clear layout with relaxed graphic elements that resonate with the laid-back surf culture. I left 2 pages empty for possible advertisements and then decided to just go ahead and design those too, for practice purposes. This resulted in an ad for a fictitious board sports fashion collection and a juice brand.
